Lagerwey arrives in Atlanta after a very successful run in Seattle where he led the Sounders to the 2022 Concacaf Champions League title earlier this year, as well as the MLS Cup championships in 2019 and 2016 and made the MLS Cup final on two other occasions. His team Sounders also reached the League Cup final in 2021.

Prior to his move to Seattle, Lagerwey served as general manager and senior vice president of football operations for Real Salt Lake of MLS, guiding the team to their only MLS title in 2009 and another MLS Cup Final appearance. . Its Salt Lake sides also reached the US Open Cup final in 2013 and in 2011 RSL became the first MLS side to reach the Concacaf Champions League final.

After graduating from Duke University in 1994, Lagerwey played five seasons as a goaltender in MLS with the Kansas City Wizards, Dallas Burn and Miami Fusion. He then earned his JD from Georgetown School of Law in 2004.

He was named MLS Sporting Director of the Year at the end of the league season of Seattle’s 2019 MLS Cup and has served as co-chairman of the MLS Football Directors Committee since 2018. The academies he oversees in Seattle and Salt Lake have won multiple championships and his MLS clubs have qualified for the playoffs with four different head coaches and won 24 home playoff games. The teams he managed qualified for the MLS playoffs for a remarkable 14 consecutive seasons from 2008 to 2021.
